Chapter Thirteen

I glance across the desk at Ambrose who is studying the file that belongs to the woman without arms from the original Frankenbody. It’s an interesting case, not just because of the freaky factor, but that Dean is running it. Just like the body, a whole host of officers, detectives, and consultants are being pieced together to form the bigger picture.

Ours happens to be the… Valerie Stone. A witch that disappeared eight months ago from a nearby coven. Or what remains of it.

Ambrose hands me a copy of the missing file. “Here, let’s go over everything we know. Dean informed her father this morning and he took some statements. Let’s see if anything stands out about it.”

I nod and take a stack from him. This case was giving us a good chance to perfect our office work together.

“Why her arms?” I ask as I look at Valerie’s picture for what feels like the hundredth time in the past hour.

“What do you mean?” Ambrose asks, not looking up from the statement he's reading.

“Why hers? Was it personal or was it just because she was a witch?” It's something that's been bothering me about all of this. Everyone has been trying to uncover a personal motivation because those are the most common, but what if this is something different?

Ambrose hums. “That’s a good question. So far, we haven’t been able to find any personal connection between the five victims. At some point, we’d have to assume they were targeted for what they were. But how would our killer know this? Most paranormals don’t mix, let alone share personal information like this.”

“True… But there are places where they do. We don’t even have to look far for it,” I say, gesturing around. “Here. I know you’re a mage. Or that Stacey’s a necromancer. I don’t know what some of the other people we work with are, but I could make some educated guesses.”

“Hmm, that’s an interesting theory. So you’re saying all these people could be connected by a workplace or something?”

I appreciate that he isn't just laughing my theory out of the office. He must think there's something in what I'm saying.

“Maybe? Where did our witch work?”

Ambrose riffles through the papers. “Let’s see… Ah, here. Connect X, it’s one of the largest job centres for paranormals. They have offices all over the country”

“I didn’t realise a company like that existed." Which isn't surprising, I've never actually had to look for a job. I've always known I'd work in Grammie's shop. "Maybe the others also worked there or used the service?”

“I’m not sure… I feel like I would’ve remembered that,” Ambrose hums. “Let’s grab Chantelle’s case. If she was a mermaid working on land, she might not have had a lot of contacts and used this service. Where is her file?”

“Here.” I grab the file from one of the many stacks on the desk and flip through it. “Hmmm… She worked at the docks for a certain Ronald Clangy. There’s a contact number. Did you ever talk to him?”

Ambrose nods.
